Real Madrid won this derby 3-2. But for long stretches of it, you would not have believed that was coming.<\/p>\n
Watching the first half live, the thing that stood out immediately was how structured and organised Atletico looked. Simeone set up in a 4-4-2, kept his shape compact, and made Real Madrid’s life genuinely difficult. This was not the chaotic, backs-to-the-wall Atletico of old. It was a side with a clear attacking plan, and for 50 minutes that plan was winning.<\/p>\n
Atletico kept sending runners into the channel between Rudiger and Fran Garcia on Real Madrid’s left side. Again and again. It was not accidental. They had clearly identified that gap before the match and built their attacking plan around it.<\/p>\n
Fran Garcia is a naturally attacking left back. He wants to push forward, and that is part of why he is in the team. But every time he did, the space behind him opened up, and Rudiger was repeatedly left covering ground he should not have had to cover. In the 33rd minute, Lookman found that channel again and finished clinically to make it 1-0. The xG on that chance was just 0.02, which tells you everything about how well the movement was timed. He kept finding the half-second of space between Atletico’s lines, taking the ball on the half-turn, and moving Real Madrid up the pitch when everything around him was stuck. For an 18-year-old in a Madrid derby, that is remarkable composure.<\/p>\n
When Vinicius converted a penalty in the 52nd minute to make it 1-1, the game opened up completely. The compact structure that had served Atletico so well started to stretch, and once there was space, Real Madrid’s individual quality began to show.<\/p>\n
Three minutes later Valverde scored to make it 2-1. Then Atletico equalised through Molina with a stunning 30-metre strike, the kind of goal you simply applaud. At 2-2 in a derby with half an hour left, it could have gone either way.<\/p>\n
At that point Real Madrid brought on Mbappe and Alexander-Arnold, both of whom had been benched for turning up late to training. That decision is its own story, and we will come back to it. Alexander-Arnold came on, switched the play with the kind of pass only he plays, and Vinicius curled the winner into the top corner in the 72nd minute.<\/p>\n
Valverde was sent off in the 77th minute, and suddenly the whole complexion of the night changed again. Real Madrid had to defend a one-goal lead with ten men for 13 minutes plus stoppage time. Anyone who has watched this fixture knows how those minutes usually go.<\/p>\n
They held on. Barely. Lunin saved from Sorloth in the 93rd minute to secure the three points, a save that was as important as any of the goals. Defending a derby lead a man down is partly tactics and partly sheer will, and Real Madrid found enough of both.<\/p>\n
Real Madrid are now four points behind Barcelona with nine games remaining. The gap is real, but it is not unreachable, and a derby win like this keeps the pressure on at the top.<\/p>\n
The bigger takeaway is about Arbeloa’s message. Benching Mbappe and Alexander-Arnold for lateness, then bringing them on to change the game, sent a clear signal: stars earn their place through attitude first, talent second. It is a bold way to manage a dressing room full of egos. On this evidence, with an 18-year-old controlling midfield and two benched superstars deciding the result off the bench, that system is working.<\/p>\n
It would be unfair to walk away from this game treating it only as a Real Madrid story, because Simeone deserves real credit even in defeat. For 50 minutes his Atletico were the better-organised, more coherent side, and the game plan to attack that left-sided channel was excellent. Losing it came down to fine margins and Real Madrid’s individual quality, not a failure of preparation.<\/p>\n
The lesson for Atletico is a cruel one. They did almost everything right and still lost, because at the very top a brilliant plan can be undone by two or three moments of elite execution from the opposition. Simeone will know his side competed.
